After meeting your guide at the starting location, you will board your safari bus which is going to take you to the heart of Cozumel Island to visit Villa Maya, a private natural reserve area located in the center of the island. This is a walking expedition that is perfect for guests with a passion for outdoors and interest in learning about the tropical environments and the ancient Mesoamerican Mayan culture. Depending on your groups physical condition, you will walk between 3 - 6 miles.
You will follow cleared paths through the jungle where you will learn about the island's wild life, see the local Orchid’s and Bromelia, hear about Geological history and discover Mayan vestiges and how the inhabitants lived. You will also learn about the Mayans use of the tropical plants. After your hike, you will have the opportunity to try natural beverages, and regional snacks.
Villa Maya provides services for eco – tourism travelers. Its basic facilities include cabanas or hammocks you can rent, a dining area, restrooms, showers, bonfire area and trails in the jungle. There is no electricity.
The owners encourage wild life management and environmental education programs to increase the ecological understanding of locals as well as visitors. It offers a unique opportunity to visit the jungle, look at different vegetation communities and fauna, and have a better understanding and appreciation of the local environment. The natural reserve has a code of practice to minimize the negative social, environmental and economic impacts of your visit.
