OLD SLAVE MART MUSEUM
The complex once known as Ryan's Mart held perhaps the most famous slave market in the south owned and run by a city alderman and former sheriff. The Old Slave Mart is the only remaining structure once used as a slave auction gallery. Located on one of Charleston's original cobblestoned streets, the building was constructed in 1856 and used as a slave trading shed for eight years after the city required trading to be done indoors. The museum gives a detailed history of the trans-Atlantic and domestic slave trade which helped to strengthen Charleston's financial and political networks within the state.
