Spend your day at Pompeii and Sorrento, two sites that show off two very different sides of Italy. You'll travel back in time as you explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii before going back to the future in the modern town of Sorrento.
The ancient ruins of Pompeii were once part of a prosperous city before being destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. The city, buried under ash and rubble, was considered lost until it was rediscovered in 1748. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the ruins are one of the country's most popular attractions; Pompeii receives more than 2 million visitors each year. Your guide will show you some of its more notable sites, such as the Forum, the Thermal Baths, the Lupanare, and the House of Vetti, which was owned by two freedmen and includes beautiful frescoes dating back to 1st century A.D.
Before continuing for Sorrento, you'll make a quick lunch stop. You will then have about one hour to explore Sorrento with your guide, who will take you through the town's narrow streets and whisk you away to Villa Comunale, a scenic park that was built in 1780 and is full of neoclassical statues dedicated to Naples's heroes. After taking in the sights of this park, your Pompeii and Sorrento day tour will return to Naples. For a look at both ancient and modern Italy, check out this Pompeii and Sorrento tour today.
