Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill is a historic area in Washington DC best known as the location of the US Capitol. The US Capitol as an iconic domed structure perched atop Capitol Hill offering great views of the National Mall and the Washington Monument. Perhaps one of the most important buildings in the United States, the US Capitol houses both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The US Capitol was commissioned in 1792 by Thomas Jefferson and construction began in 1798. The Senate wing was completed in 1800 and House of Representatives wing was finally completed in 1811. The Capitol is also well known for its collection of art. Large mural adorn the hallways depicting the history and leadership of the United States. Murals depicting animals and flora indigenous to the United States can also be seen. Perhaps the most famous feature of the Capitol is the large rotunda. Inside, visitors can see eight large paintings about the development of the United States.
