Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors members the United States armed forces who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The memorial is located in Constitution Gardens adjacent to the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial. Completed in 1982, the memorial consists of three sections: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Three Soldiers statue, and the Vietnam Women's Memorial.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is the most recognizable and visited portion of the memorial. The wall encompasses two stone sections that are 246 feet long and 10 feet high. One section points toward the Washington Monument and the other towards the Lincoln Memorial. Inscribed on these sections are the names of over 58,000 members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the conflict. To recognize a lost loved one, friend or to show appreciation for a fallen soldier, visitors have been known to take a piece of paper, place it over a name on the wall and rub a pencil over it creating an image of the name on paper.
