World War II Memorial

The World War II Memorial honors members of the US armed forces and civilians who perished in World War II. The impressive memorial consists of 56 pillars arranged in a large semicircle and two small arches surrounding a plaza and fountain. Each of the pillars is 17 feet high, each inscribed with the name of a US state as well as the District of Columbia and other US territories and commonwealths. The memorial is located on the National Mall. Opened in April 2004, the World War II Memorial welcomes nearly 4.5 million visitors per year.
