The FDR Memorial was built to honor Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States. President Roosevelt is credited with many achievements including leading the United States during World War II, establishing Social Security, dramatically lowering unemployment and endorsing the creation of the United Nations. The FDR Memorial, dedicated in May 1997, stands on 7.5 acres adjacent to the Potomac Tidal River Basin. The memorial traces 12 years of US history through a series of four outdoor rooms, one for each of FDR's terms in office. The main sculpture depicts the president alongside his dog. Other sculptures display scenes from the Great Depression. The memorial also includes a bronze statue of his wife, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. It is the only presidential memorial to depict a First Lady.
