Mount Vernon was the home of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Located near Alexandria Virginia, approximately 20 miles from Washington DC, the Mount Vernon property encompasses over 500 acres. The primary house, a two-storied mansion built of wood, was constructed by George Washington in between 1758 and 1778. The mansion is flanked by two single-story secondary wings, built in 1775. These secondary wings, housing the servants and the kitchen, are connected to the main house by colonnades built in 1778. The completion of the colonnades created “Mansion Circle” giving the house its imposing image. The rooms at Mount Vernon have been restored to their original appearance. The rooms include two dining rooms, Washington's study, the Front Parlor, the West Parlor, the kitchen and several bedrooms. Mount Vernon was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
