Thomas Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and a Founding Father of America. The neoclassical building was designed by the architect John Russell Pope and constructed built by Philadelphia builder John McShain. Construction of the building began in 1939 and was completed in 1943. The Jefferson Memorial includes marble steps leading to a circular colonnade of columns and a dome. Inside, visitors will see the focal point of the structure, a bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson. Panels inside the monument display quotes from the Declaration of Independence, A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom, and other historically significant writings Thomas Jefferson was involved with. The monument is located on the shore of the Potomac River Tidal Basin and the grounds include a large number of Japanese cherry trees, a gift from the people of Japan in 1912.
