The Smithsonian

Perhaps the most famous museum in the United States, the Smithsonian is the largest museum complex in the World. It houses nineteen museums, nine research centers, and a zoo. The Smithsonian houses over 137 million items and artifacts. Founded in 1846, the museum now welcomes over 30 million visitors annually. The Smithsonian is well known for its large and eclectic collection ranging from George Washington’s uniform to the compass used by Lewis and Clark to the Hope Diamond to the Wright Flyer (the first successful powered airplane). Some of the most well known museums in the Smithsonian are the American History Museum, American Art Museum, Natural History Museum, and the Air and Space Museum.
